If someone is in danger right now, call 115 for an ambulance. Call 113 for police if there is a threat to self or others. Emergency numbers in Vietnam are operated in Vietnamese only.

For English, use these 24/7 lines instead:

  • Family Medical Practice: *9999 or +84 28 3744 9000, in English and Vietnamese.
  • FV Hospital ambulance: (028) 35 11 35 00.
  • Raffles Medical: *1155.
  • City International Hospital: (028) 6290 1155.

These are emergency medical lines, not counselling lines. At night they are your route, because general hospital mental health departments are not generally available out of normal hours.

For English-speaking care, go to an international private hospital or a private counselling centre. Foreigners are likely to struggle to access services without an interpreter unless they use international private hospitals.

Cost, insurance and payment

Private and international hospitals with English-speaking psychiatrists and psychologists are much more expensive than state hospitals. You are expected to pay the cost of treatment, and a deposit before admission.

Some insurance companies exclude cover for a mental health condition. The test or treatment of psychiatric, psychological, mental or nervous disorders is among the common exclusions in policies. Social insurance often requires payment up front. The health insurance guide covers direct billing.

Medication and prescriptions

Doctors assess your situation before they prescribe, even when you hold a UK prescription. Some medications prescribed in the UK may not be available in Vietnam. Carrying a copy of your prescription can help doctors find the exact or similar medication. The pharmacy guide covers buying medicine.

In Vietnam, people with mental health needs may be hospitalised without their consent. The trigger is threatening behaviour towards themselves or others, or urgent need of treatment when they cannot decide for themselves.

Hotlines for children

Vietnam’s free national child protection hotline is 111. It offers round-the-clock telephone consultancy on child protection, free of charge. The line was still in operation in 2025. The emergency numbers guide covers the other lines, and the hospitals guide covers emergency care.
